Beyond the Staircases: Why We Stayed Outside Bellagio
If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram, you’ve seen "The Pearl of Lake Como"; the steep, cobbled staircases of Bellagio lined with boutique shops and flower-covered balconies, not to mention the instagrammers. It is stunning. And, very busy. So, in planning our transition from the high-energy "classroom" of Rome to the stillness of the lake, I had one major priority: pool over cool.
For a family traveling in the peak of the European summer, those iconic staircases aren't just a photo op, they are a logistical hurdle, especially with the aforementioned instagrammers. That’s why we made what turned out to be the best decision of the trip: we stayed outside of the main town.
The "Pool Life" Reset: Our Sanctuary at Aqua&Co Bellagio.
Despite my parents staying in the main town, we traded the crowded centre for a small, gorgeous B&B near the quaint hamlet of San Giovanni. The "MVP" of this stay? The pool.

After the dust and history of the Colosseum, walking into our sanctuary at Aqua&Co Bellagio felt like a literal breath of fresh air. Here we could feel the magic in "Slow-Coast" travel where the busy itinerary is replaced by unstructured time; space to indulge in a place’s culture rather than its entertainment. We spent our afternoons jumping into the water, watching the light change over the mountains, and simply letting Archie be a kid. One afternoon, the owner, Elena, took Archie on a walk with her dogs and bought him gelato and pastries.
Elena and her family live upstairs so it has a B&B vibe. The breakfast that she creates each morning is varied and full of local produce so you’ll feel like you’re getting a real taste of the Italian Lakes.
The Strategy: Navigating the Lake without the Noise
Staying outside the main hub didn't mean missing out; it meant experiencing the lake with more grit and less stress.
The Commute: We were a 30 minute walk down to the main Bellagio town which was perfect for watching everyday life. The way back uphill was a bit much so we would catch the Bellagio On Wheels small train for $5 each that brought us close enough to Aqua&Co. It leaves approximately each hour.
The Unstructured Learning: While our time in Rome was about inquiry and facts, Bellagio was about observation. Nearby, about 1000 steps downhill (and uphill on the return journey), you’ll find the tiny town of San Giovanni that also has a tiny beach and a tiny cafe (with excellent coffee). The walks nearby are super cute with many photo-worthy spots along the way.
The Respite: When the midday heat hit or the crowds in the main town became too much, we didn't have to fight for space. We just retreated to our quiet garden and our private pool.

The Investment
Choosing a boutique B&B over a grand hotel on the main drag allowed us to stretch our budget further without sacrificing the vibe we love. It was proof that in travel, sometimes the best "perk" isn't a five-star lobby—it’s the peace of mind that comes with a quiet terrace and a place to cool off.
Tip Alert: Lake Como Edition
Embrace the Food: Just a 10 minute stroll from our lodgings, Al Corner Bar offers delicious pizza, yummy spritz’s and a view of the lake for approximately €7 per item. We loved meeting the locals and watching their interactions and the easy nature of the place.
On the other end of the dining spectrum is Ristorante Alta Vista at theIlPerlo Hotel. The restaurant offers a complimentary shuttle to/from anywhere in Bellagio and, despite the 5-star service, is reasonably priced.
Get out to Varenna: One day, we took a car ferry to/from Varenna which was interesting (still very busy with tourists though). We had lunch by the water there and walked around Villa Monastero.
The "Cardio" Reality: Pack sensible shoes and bring day-packs. Even if you stay outside the centre, the lake is all about hills and cobbles. Leave the "fine-dining" heels and handbag at home and stick to travel-ready grit.
